Who we are
The centre was set up 20 years ago by Fr. Liam Hayes, of Co. Limerick, Ireland. It was in response to the subhuman conditions of the poor and disabled people who were trying to survive.
Today there are over 30 staff members supporting over 100 residents, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
The foundation consists of St Teresa’s – the home for people with severe disabilities, and Our Lady of Lujan – a home for elderly and abandoned citizens.
Currently, a hospice is under construction, because very often we have ill and dying residents who need space and quiet on their journey out of this life. We are also building, at the present time, a home for our severely intellecutally disabled people which is a most urgent priority.
José’s story
José (65) is hemiplegic – paralysed on the right hand side of his body – and unable to speak.
Originally from Paraguay, José worked as a night watchman in Buenos Aires. He was attacked in the course of his work, and now has a bullet which is lodged in his head and which cannot safely be removed.
Abandoned by his wife and family, José was found by Santa Teresa staff in 1995 at a centre for lepers. “Like all our other residents José has improved no end since coming to the Home,” says Fr Hayes. “But he is not always easy to deal with. He likes to be alone and undisturbed.”
